In short: what are the options

Ukraine’s airspace is closed, so there are no direct flights from Ukraine. The journey has two parts: get to an airport in a neighbouring country and fly to Tirana — or travel by bus or car through the Balkans.

  • Fastest: a train or bus to Poland (Kraków, Warsaw, Katowice), Hungary (Budapest), Romania (Bucharest) or Moldova (Chișinău) — then a 2-hour flight to Tirana (TIA).
  • By bus: the big European carriers have no direct routes from Ukraine to Albania, so you will have to change — most often in Budapest, Belgrade or Skopje.
  • By car: from Uzhhorod to Tirana is roughly 1 300 km, from Kyiv over 2 000 km. Allow 2–3 days, including border queues.
  • Ukrainian citizens don’t need a visa: up to 90 days within 180 on a biometric international passport. More details — in the guide to entering Albania.

By bus

There is no direct scheduled FlixBus route from Ukraine to Albania (as of October 2026). But the network lets you get there with connections.

  • FlixBus serves Tirana: direct routes to Skopje, Podgorica, Budva, Kotor, Belgrade, Sofia, Thessaloniki, Dubrovnik, Ljubljana and other cities. From Tirana there are also buses to Shkodër, Theth and Koman.
  • From Ukraine FlixBus runs to Poland, Czechia, Germany and Hungary, as well as to Chișinău, Modlin and Budapest airports. Plan a route with connections on flixbus.ua, entering «Tirana» as the destination.
  • The bus journey takes 1.5–2 days. It’s cheaper than flying if you have a lot of luggage, but tiring, especially with children.
  • Tirana has several bus stations: FlixBus services leave from different stops (East Gate, Asllan Rusi, Jug-Veri bus terminal). Check the exact stop on your ticket.

By car through the Balkans

The typical route goes through Hungary and Serbia, then via Montenegro, North Macedonia or Kosovo. Each leg means a separate border and separate entry rules.

  1. 1Ukraine → Hungary (crossings in Zakarpattia) or Romania (Porubne — Siret).
  2. 2Hungary → Serbia (Röszke — Horgoš) → Belgrade.
  3. 3Then your choice: via Montenegro to the Hani i Hotit crossing near Shkodër; via North Macedonia (Skopje — Struga) to Qafë Thanë; or via Kosovo to the Morinë crossing — the shortest, by motorway to Tirana.
  4. 4In Albania a car with Ukrainian plates is admitted under temporary import: up to 6 months within 12.
  • A «Green Card» (international motor insurance) is mandatory. Since 2025 it only takes effect from the day after it is issued (MTIBU), so buy it in advance. From 12 May 2026 eCherha automatically checks the policy when you book. The electronic border queue — echerha.gov.ua.
  • Check the country codes on your route in the policy: AL (Albania), SRB, MNE, MK, H, RO. Kosovo is not part of the Green Card system — you buy separate border insurance there.
  • Serbia does not recognise the Kosovo border as a state border. If you enter Kosovo from Albania or North Macedonia and plan to exit into Serbia, you may run into problems. The simplest option is to return the same way you came.
  • Entry conditions for Ukrainians in Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Kosovo differ. Check them before your trip on the Ukrainian embassy pages at mfa.gov.ua.
  • Car documents: vehicle registration certificate, driving licence (ideally with an international one), Green Card. If the car isn’t yours — a notarised power of attorney from the owner.
  • How temporary import works, time limits and fines — in the guide to cars in Albania.

Leaving Ukraine: men of conscription age

Under martial law, men aged 18–60 face restrictions on leaving. The grounds are set by the Rules for Crossing the State Border by Citizens of Ukraine.

Documents for entering Albania

Ukrainian citizens do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days within 180.

  • An international passport valid for the whole trip. The internal passport (ID card) is not valid for entry to Albania.
  • Children need their own international passport. If a child travels with one parent or with another person, the other parent’s consent may be requested when leaving Ukraine: the conditions are in the Border Crossing Rules.
  • Accommodation bookings, a return ticket and medical insurance are rarely asked for at the border, but it’s better to have them with you (on your phone is fine).
  • Planning to stay longer than 90 days — apply for a residence permit: basic rules. After arrival — registering your address.
  • Consular matters (passports, certificates) — Embassy of Ukraine in Albania.

Travelling with a dog or cat

If you travel through the EU (Poland, Hungary, Romania), first meet the EU rules for animals from Ukraine — they are stricter than Albania’s.

  • A microchip (ISO 11784/11785) and a rabies vaccination given after microchipping.
  • A rabies antibody titre test at an EU-approved laboratory. It has to be done in advance, so start preparing a few months before the trip.
  • The international veterinary certificate is issued by the state veterinary service. Current requirements and timelines are on the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection website.
  • Albania requires a microchip, a rabies vaccination and a veterinary certificate. Check details for animals from Ukraine with Albania’s National Food Authority (AKU) or the embassy.
  • On planes, each airline has its own rules for carrying animals, and some low-cost airlines don’t take animals at all. Check this before buying a ticket.
Routes and schedules change every season. Flight data was collected from airline and airport announcements as of 12 October 2026; the rules for leaving Ukraine are from CMU Resolution № 57. Before travelling, check the schedule on the carrier’s website and the current border crossing rules.
