Which ferry routes are there

Three Albanian ports handle passenger ferries: Durrës (routes to Italy), Vlorë (to Italy) and Sarandë (to the Greek island of Corfu). In Q2 2026, 336 103 passengers passed through them: 60.6% via Sarandë, 34.9% via Durrës, 4.5% via Vlorë.

  • ≈ 10 h, overnight

    Bari ↔ Durrës

The main route to Italy, running year-round, daily. According to the Durrës port schedule for 12.10.2026, ships leave Durrës at 22:00 and arrive from Bari at around 08:00. Carriers: Adria Ferries, GNV and Ventouris (Rigel ships).

  • ≈ 16–19 h

    Ancona ↔ Durrës

An Adria Ferries route. Off-season — 3 sailings a week; from about 1 July to mid-September — daily. Ferries arrive in Durrës at around 11:00 and depart at around 18:00.

  • check

    Trieste ↔ Durrës

Adria Ferries lists Trieste among its destinations, but as of October 2026 this route is not on the Durrës port list of lines. Check the schedule on the carrier’s website.

  • ≈ 5–7 h

    Brindisi ↔ Vlorë

The route runs year-round: from 1 January to 12 August 2026 it carried 45 633 passengers (Vlorë harbour master data). The main carrier is Star Lines. There are more sailings in summer.

  • ≈ 30 min – 1.5 h

    Corfu ↔ Sarandë

The shortest way between Albania and Greece. Fast boats take about 30 minutes, regular ferries longer. Sailings run year-round, but there are few in winter and many every day in summer. Carriers: Finikas Lines, Ionian Seaways and others.

  • What arrives in and departs from Durrës today is shown on the Durrës Port Authority’s «Tragetet sot» page. The list of carriers and ships is in the «Kompanitë e lundrimit» section.
  • Crossing times depend on the ship, so check the exact time on your ticket. The overnight Bari — Durrës sailings are convenient: you sleep in a cabin or a seat and arrive in the morning.
  • We did not find a regular ferry route between mainland Greece (Igoumenitsa) and Albania. People usually travel between the two countries via Corfu — Sarandë or overland through the Kakavia border crossing.

Seasonality

The Bari — Durrës and Brindisi — Vlorë routes run year-round. In summer there are more sailings, but tickets also sell out faster, especially for cars.

  • The peak is July and August. That’s when the Albanian diaspora travels from Italy, so book cabins and car spaces for popular dates several weeks ahead.
  • Ancona — Durrës: daily from about 1 July to mid-September, the rest of the year 3 sailings a week (Tue, Thu, Sat from Ancona; Wed, Fri, Sun from Durrës — according to the Adria Ferries route page).
  • Corfu — Sarandë: in summer sailings run every hour or more often, in winter one or two a day. According to INSTAT, about 14% of all the country’s sea passengers passed through Sarandë port in Q1 2026, so the route runs in winter too.
  • In winter sailings are cancelled more often because of storms. Plan your trip with some slack and follow the carrier’s announcements.

How to buy a ticket

Tickets are sold by the carriers on their websites, as well as by their agencies at the ports and by travel agencies.

  1. 1Check the schedule on the carrier’s official website: on the routes to Italy these are Adria Ferries, GNV, Ventouris Ferries and Star Lines. On the Corfu — Sarandë route — Finikas Lines, Ionian Seaways and other carriers.
  2. 2Choose the type of place: deck, seat or cabin. On the overnight sailing to Bari a cabin replaces a hotel night. If you are travelling by car, enter its make, length and height.
  3. 3The first name and surname on the ticket must exactly match your international passport, in Latin letters.
  4. 4Arrive at the port in good time: the check-in closing time is on the ticket. In summer, allow even more time with a car, as queues form at the port entrance.

Prices depend on the season, day of the week, type of place and whether you have a car. Compare them on the carriers’ websites before buying: we don’t quote prices because they change almost daily.

Durrës port: how to get to the ferry

The ferry terminal is in the city centre, next to the railway station. At the port entrance you show the police your passport and ticket.

  • Gate № 3 — in the Durrës railway station building. Foot passengers without a car use it, then take the footbridge to the ferry terminal.
  • Gate № 4 — by the Dajlani Bridge (Ura e Dajlanit). Everyone arriving by car from the Tirana — Durrës motorway or from other cities is advised to use it.
  • Gate № 2 — opposite the Bank of Albania building. It is used by those driving in from the city districts of Durrës.
  • According to the port FAQ, a daily port pass costs 60 LEK for a pedestrian and 240 LEK for a car (issued at the gates). Fees as of October 2026 — check on site.
  • Gate map and routes from the borders — on the port’s page, answers to common questions — in the FAQ. How to get to Durrës from Tirana airport — airport — Durrës bus.

Documents: Schengen on the other shore

Italy and Greece are in the Schengen Area, Albania is not. So when you step off the ferry in Bari, Brindisi, Ancona or Corfu, you are crossing the Schengen external border.

  • With a biometric international passport, Ukrainian citizens travel to Schengen without a visa: up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Days in Schengen and days in Albania are counted separately: the Albanian limit does not reduce the Schengen one, and vice versa.
  • An Albanian residence permit does not give the right to live in Schengen. For Italy and Greece the usual 90/180 rule applies, even if you live in Albania.
  • Since 12 October 2025 the EES system has been running at Schengen external borders, including seaports: on your first entry your face and fingerprints will be scanned. The first check may take longer. The ETIAS authorisation had not yet launched as of October 2026 — the EU will announce the start date separately.
  • At the border you may be asked about the purpose of your trip, accommodation bookings, a return ticket and whether you have enough money. Have these on your phone or printed out.
  • Returning to Albania follows the usual entry rules for Ukrainians: see visa to Albania.
  • Children travel on their own passport. If a child travels with one parent, carry the birth certificate. The other parent’s consent is not always mandatory, but may be needed.

Taking a car on the ferry

All routes to Italy take cars, while on Corfu — Sarandë there are few car spaces, and not on every sailing.

  1. 1Book a car space together with your ticket and give the exact dimensions. A trailer, roof box or bike rack increases the car’s length and height.
  2. 2Bring the vehicle registration certificate in the driver’s name. If the car isn’t yours, you need a power of attorney, and for Italy and Greece it’s advisable to have it translated.
  3. 3Check your «Green Card» (international motor insurance): Italy (I), Greece (GR) and Albania (AL) must not be crossed out.
  4. 4You are not allowed to access the car during the crossing, so take what you need (documents, medicines, water, overnight clothes) up to the deck in advance.
  5. 5Entering the EU from Albania, you go through EU customs: cash of 10 000 euros or more must be declared, and bringing in cigarettes, alcohol, meat and dairy products is restricted. Cash declaration rules — on the European Commission website.
  6. 6Rules for cars with Ukrainian plates in Albania itself — car registration.
Routes, ships and the schedule for 12 October 2026 are from the official website of the Durrës Port Authority (APD); each port’s share of passenger traffic is from INSTAT, maritime transport, Q2 2026; data on the Brindisi — Vlorë route is from a state agency ATA report (August 2026). Crossing times for Ancona — Durrës and Brindisi — Vlorë are approximate, based on carriers’ schedules. Schedules and prices change, so check the carrier’s website before you travel.
