In short: how much you need per month

Albania is cheaper than most EU countries, but not «cheap» across the board: rent in Tirana and on the coast, meat, cheese and fuel cost about the same as in neighbouring EU countries, and prices are rising faster than a few years ago.

  • One person, excluding rent≈620 € a month — Numbeo estimate for Albania; in Tirana ≈62 000 LEK (≈675 €)≈57 000 LEK
  • Family of four, excluding rent≈2 300 € a month — Numbeo estimate for Albania; in Tirana ≈2 500 €≈210 000 LEK
  • Example: one person in Durrës≈57 000 LEK of expenses + ≈27 000 LEK (≈295 €) for a one-bedroom flat outside the centre≈84 000 LEK
  • Example: family of four in Durrës≈210 000 LEK of expenses + ≈38 000 LEK (≈415 €) for a three-room flat outside the centre≈250 000 LEK

Approximate, as of 12.10.2026. The «excluding rent» estimates are from Numbeo (user-submitted data, not official statistics); the Durrës examples are our own calculation based on the same data. Exchange rate — Bank of Albania official rate on 12.10.2026: 1 € = 91.61 LEK. The Numbeo estimate assumes a «western» lifestyle with cafés and imported goods; people who cook at home and shop at the market spend noticeably less.

Wages and inflation

To make sense of prices, it helps to know what locals earn: these are official figures from INSTAT and the Albanian government.

  • Minimum wageGross, from 1 January 2026 (CoM Decision № 776 of 19.12.2025); previously 40 000 LEK50 000 LEK
  • Average wageGross, Q1 2026, +9.6% year on year (INSTAT)90 119 LEK

Rent by city

The biggest expense. Long-term rents are usually quoted in euros and paid monthly; the landlord typically asks for a deposit of one month’s rent.

  • Tirana

    1 bedroom, centre
    ≈720 €
    1 bedroom, outside centre
    ≈430 €
    3 rooms
    ≈800–1 380 €

The most expensive city in the country; in the very centre (Blloku, Komuna e Parisit) prices are even higher.

  • Durrës

    1 bedroom, centre
    ≈400 €
    1 bedroom, outside centre
    ≈295 €
    3 rooms
    ≈415–630 €

In summer owners often rent by the night; a yearly lease is cheaper and easier to find from September to May.

  • Vlorë

    1 bedroom, centre
    ≈485 €
    1 bedroom, outside centre
    ≈375 €
    3 rooms
    ≈500–625 €

Prices on the seafront (Lungomare) are noticeably higher than in the older neighbourhoods.

  • Sarandë

    1 bedroom, centre
    ≈300–760 €
    1 bedroom, outside centre
    ≈340 €
    3 rooms
    ≈820–980 €

Little data and a wide spread: a resort town where prices depend heavily on the season.

  • Prices are approximate Numbeo averages as of October 2026, per month excluding utilities. Real listings can differ by 20–30% either way.
  • A «1 room» flat in Albanian listings is a 1+1 (bedroom plus living room with kitchen); «3 rooms» means 3+1 or 2+1 depending on the city.
  • On the coast (Durrës, Vlorë, Sarandë) look for a yearly lease in September–October: in summer many owners only rent by the night or raise the price.
  • How to search, check the landlord and draw up a lease (including for a residence permit) — renting a home in Albania.

  • Milk, 1 l≈180 LEK
  • Eggs, 12≈305 LEK
  • Local cheese, 1 kgWhite cheese (djathë i bardhë) is the most common≈1 040 LEK

  • Apples, 1 kg≈160 LEK
  • Water, 1.5 l≈60 LEK
  • Vegetables, fruit, herbs and fish at the market (pazari) are usually cheaper and fresher than in the supermarket, especially in season. Market prices are often written per kilo — double-check.
  • More expensive than Ukrainians are used to: imported cheeses and sausages, buckwheat and other «home» foods (look in the small «Eastern European» sections of the big chains), baby food, household chemicals.
  • Where to shop in Durrës and Vlorë — chains, markets, fish wholesalers: shopping in Durrës and shopping in Vlorë.

Smetana, yoghurt and familiar dairy products

Smetana (Ukrainian-style sour cream) is not part of traditional Albanian cuisine — this is yoghurt country, like Greece, Bulgaria or Turkey. But substitutes are easy to find.

  • Schmand (18%) — imported sour cream from Germany, Poland or Italy. Look on the cream shelf in larger supermarkets. Roughly 350–400 LEK a tub.
  • Kos — a thick local yoghurt. It is made differently, but tastes closest to smetana and is sold everywhere: a 380 g pot costs roughly 70–80 LEK.
  • Salcë kosi — a ready-made yoghurt-based sauce that goes well with potatoes, meat and vegetables.
  • Prices are based on the experience of Ukrainians in Albania, as of October 2026; they may vary between shops.

Cafés and restaurants

Coffee is part of local culture, so it’s inexpensive. Lunch in a simple restaurant costs less than in most EU countries.

  • CappuccinoNumbeo: Durrës / Tirana≈165–185 LEK
  • Lunch at an inexpensive restaurantPer person≈800 LEK
  • Dinner for two at a mid-range restaurantThree courses, without drinks≈4 500 LEK
  • Local beer, 0.5 lNumbeo: Durrës / Tirana≈250–290 LEK

Approximate, as of October 2026 (Numbeo). Espresso is usually cheaper than cappuccino — check the menu. According to INSTAT, restaurants and hotels became more expensive year on year in August 2026, so prices on the coast may be higher in season. Ask for a fiscal receipt (kupon tatimor) — it is mandatory.

Transport

City transport is cheap, taxis are relatively expensive, fuel costs about the same as in the EU.

  • City bus (Durrës, Tirana)Single ride40 LEK
  • Monthly pass in TiranaPer month (Numbeo)≈1 600 LEK
  • Bus Durrës — Tirana≈35 min200 LEK
  • Taxi — starting fareThen per kilometre; agree on the price in advance or insist on the meter≈300 LEK
  • Petrol, 1 lNumbeo, October 2026≈190 LEK

Utilities, phone and internet

There is no central heating: in winter people heat with air conditioners or heaters, so the electricity bill from November to March is noticeably higher.

  • ElectricityFor households up to 700 kWh a month; from 701 kWh — 9.5 LEK for the whole amount (ERE, 2026)8.5 LEK/kWh
  • All utilities, 85 m² flatElectricity, water, rubbish collection per month; Vlorë / Tirana (Numbeo)≈5 000–8 000 LEK
  • Home internetPer month (Numbeo)≈1 350–1 600 LEK
  • Monthly mobile bundleVodafone, 2–20 GB, in the app≈1 100–2 100 LEK

Children, health and other costs

These costs vary greatly from family to family, so treat them as rough guides only.

  • A full-day private kindergarten in Tirana costs ≈28 000 LEK (≈310 €) a month, an international primary school from ≈7 400 € a year (Numbeo, October 2026). State kindergartens and schools are much cheaper, but teaching is in Albanian.
  • Gym — ≈4 500 LEK (≈50 €) a month in Tirana; usually cheaper in Durrës and other cities.
  • Healthcare: state insurance with FSDKSH (the Compulsory Health Insurance Fund) is ≈3 400 LEK a month, a private doctor costs extra. Details — health insurance; life with children — Durrës with children.

Tip: how to compare with Ukraine

Exchange rates and prices change every month, so it’s more reliable to compare for yourself with the same tool than to rely on other people’s «many times cheaper».

  1. 1Open your Ukrainian city on Numbeo along with, for example, Durrës or Tirana — the service can compare two cities using the same basket of goods.
  2. 2Compare rent and other expenses separately: the difference in rent is usually much bigger than in groceries.
  3. 3Budget for one-off costs at the start: a rental deposit, residence permit documents, translations and insurance.
  4. 4Write down all your expenses for the first 1–2 months — that gives the most accurate budget for your family.
  • Hryvnias cannot be exchanged in Albania: bring euros or pay with a Ukrainian Visa/Mastercard. Your bank converts at its own rate, so compare which works out better — the card or exchanging cash euros for lek.
  • An account at a local bank — bank account in Albania.
Wages, minimum wage and inflation are official data from INSTAT and Council of Ministers Decision № 776; electricity tariffs — ERE; exchange rate — Bank of Albania. Prices for rent, groceries, cafés and transport are from Numbeo (user-submitted data, not government statistics) as of October 2026; they are approximate and may differ from real prices in your area.
